DAVID DEMONSTRATION

Please take the time to complete this demonstration if you can relate to any of the follow:

1. You feel your child's primary problem is a lack of motivation.
2. You are having difficulty understanding how reading comprehension would be compromised when your child's word attack skills are low.
3. You would like to be able to empathize more with your child and what they deal with academically on a daily basis.
4. You would really like to know why your child doesn't like to read.

To complete this demonstration read the following passage out loud—preferably with someone else listening.  Please note before you begin that you should read this passage as quickly as you can.  Just so you know, the spacing and the b's, d's p's and q's are changed a bit.  As you read this passage keep in mind the guidance and instruction you regularly use with your child when they are reading.  Comments like "sound it out", "read faster", "you should know this word", and "try harder" may come to mind.  As you are reading, imagine these prompts being given to you and focus on how they impact you and your efforts.

To help with your motivation, imagine that you will earn $50.00 if you read it accurately and quickly from beginning to end.

Now that you have completed the passage you can probably have a better idea of how difficult reading is for a child with reversal problems or reading difficulties.

Giving details, can you state what the passage was about?  Chances are you will have trouble because you used up all your energy reading the passage and had nothing left over for comprehension!

Did you "earn" your imaginary $50.00 by being able to read the passage accurately and quickly?  Chances are you didn't, even though you were motivated.
